Ann Coffing Yerkes

The Society of Friends (Quakers) began in England in the 1650s, when they broke away from the Puritans. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, as a safe place for Friends to live and practice their faith.

Ann Coffing was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Abraham and Margaret Coffing.

She married John Yerkes on August 20, 1769. John was born on October 6, 1743 in the Manor of Moreland, Montgomery (formerly Philadelphia) County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Yerkes and Alice McVaugh.

She was a member of Abington Monthly Meeting at the time of her marriage. Since John was not a Quaker, she was not allowed to remain in the church.

John and Ann's children probably included:

Abraham Yerkes, (1770, married Mary Jones),
Elizabeth Yerkes (1772, married Isaac Jones),
Harman Yerkes (1774, married Elizabeth Weaver),
William Yerkes (1776, married Deborah Streper),
John Yerkes (1778, married Ann Spies and Elizabeth Stump),
Jonathan Yerkes (1780, married Elizabeth Stump), and
Sarah Yerkes (1783).

They lived in Whitemarsh Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

John died in Whitemarsh Township in 1803 or 1806.

Pennsylvania is one of the 13 original states and was originally founded in 1681 as a result of a royal land grant to William Penn, the son of the state's namesake.

from Chronicle of the Yerkes Family, with Notes on the Leech and Rutter Families by Josiah Granville Leach

John Yerkes (John, Herman, Anthony), eldest son and second child of John Yerkes by his wife Alice McVaugh, was born in the Manor of Moreland, Montgomery (formerly Philadelphia) County, Pennsylvania, 6 October, 1743; died in Whitemarsh Township, same county, in 1803 or 1806. The date marked on the inventory filed in his estate is 4 February, 1803, and the administration bond is dated 4 February, 1806. One of these is no doubt an error. He was a farmer, and resided in Whitemarsh Township.

He married (license dated 20 August, 1769) Ann Coffing, daughter of Abraham and Margaret Coffing. She was a member of Abington Meeting at the time of her marriage, but married " out of meeting,"—that is, not according to the custom of the Society of Friends,—and in consequence of such "out going" she was deprived of her membership in that society.

Children of John and Ann (Coffing) Yerkes:

Abraham Yerkes, born 29 May, 1770; died 23 or 28 October, 1827; married Mary Jones.
Elizabeth Yerkes, born 9 February, 1772; married Isaac Jones.
Harman Yerkes, born 21 May, 1774; died 15 March, 1845; married Elizabeth Weaver.
William Yerkes, born 16 July, 1776; married Deborah Streper.
John Yerkes born 20 October, 1778; died 16 May, 1848; married (1) Ann Spies; (2) Elizabeth Stump.
Jonathan Yerkes, born 30 August, 1780; married Elizabeth Stump.
Sarah Yerkes, born 13 December, 1783.
